From Form to Function:
Dots into a New Dimension

Part 2: Realizing the Icon

LIGHT TAKES FORM

⚫    ⚫

The spirit of Charles and Ray and the Eames Office was never defined by aesthetics—it was about experimentation, optimism, and process. In that same spirit, Form translated a flat graphic into a dimensional form, working across models, prototypes, and materials to explore what Ray’s Dot Pattern could become in light.

The result is a sculptural object that honors the ingenuity of the original while embracing the craftsmanship and innovation of today. With Cassina, Form engineered the Dot Pattern Light as both a tribute and a transformation—imbued with precision, soul, and a sense of discovery.

From sketch to showroom, the Dot Pattern Light evolved through tactile research and thoughtful iteration. Every curve, surface, and light source reflects a vision both rooted in history and built for the future.

As Charles and Ray once said: “We work because it’s a chain reaction: each subject leads to the next.” This is that next step—made with light.

Once you see it, it just feels right—almost as if Ray’s original drawing was always meant to be a light. Everyone involved in the design and development process knew from the start that this piece was something special, destined to be a hit.

Charles and Ray explored many of their motifs in multiple media and evolved them over time. Dot Pattern was no exception: in addition to textiles, they explored it as a lighting design. We are happy to bring that vision into fruition through our partnership with Cassina, in collaboration with Form Portfolios.

Built on the infinite possibilities of Ray Eames’ original graphic, the Dot Pattern Light collection translates a visual language into sculptural light. Known for its modular rhythm and playful geometry, the pattern was designed to be composed, scaled, and reimagined—an open system that invited interpretation. In that same spirit, the lighting collection takes shape in six dimensional forms: four pendants and two wall-mounted versions. Whether hung as a singular statement or installed in multiples, the Dot Pattern Lights offer a sense of rhythm and resonance, honoring the past while illuminating the present.

Launched by Cassina during Milan Design Week 2025, the collection marks a new chapter in the Eames lighting universe. It is both an expansion and a redefinition—translating Ray’s two-dimensional vision into dynamic, luminous objects designed for contemporary interiors.
